The rule folds in sections, so it bends to fit the job instead of staying a rigid bar. Straightened, it measures a run. Angled, it sits over a pipe or inside a cupboard frame where a tape blade has to be forced round a corner.
Working alone is the case it suits best. Hold the end against a mark with one hand, let the folded shape rest on the surface, and read the scale at the far end without a second pair of hands keeping the tape from curling back.
Both faces carry metric divisions down to 1 mm, so the mark is read from whichever side is upward. The quoted lengths are approximate: about 2 m unfolded and about 24 cm closed, with slight variation between individual rules normal for a wooden tool.
One ruler arrives, without a case. For drawing and teaching, the same rule laid flat works as a straight edge for setting out lines on paper or a classroom board, and the closed 24 cm length is the easier of the two to hold steady over a sheet.
