Handheld Refractometer - Scale Options
Refractometers are calibrated for a specific scale, so the choice depends on the liquid being tested. This handheld model is offered in several scales, including Brix, alcohol and salinity.
✅ Choose the scale for the sample - The versions are calibrated for different liquids, so the reading is in the unit that matches the test.
✅ Read through the eyepiece - The optical reading is taken directly at the instrument, without a separate meter.
✅ Carry it to the sample - The handheld format works at a tank, a fermenter or a delivery.
The right scale for the liquid
Calibrate with the reference liquid before a series of measurements, and clean and dry the prism between samples; a smeared prism gives a confident wrong reading. Hold it towards the light and focus the eyepiece for your eye.
A refractometer measures the sample on the prism, not the whole tank, so take a representative sample. Temperature affects the reading, and the instrument's scale assumes a reference temperature.
