How Much Data Does a 4G Security Camera Use?
There is no single data figure for every 4G camera. Consumption depends on resolution, bitrate, compression, frame rate, live-view time and event uploads.

What Uses the Most Data?
Continuous remote streaming usually consumes much more data than occasionally checking the camera. Cloud uploads and remote playback can also increase usage.
A Simple Estimate
A 1 Mbps stream represents about 0.125 MB per second, roughly 450 MB per hour before protocol overhead and variations. A 2 Mbps stream is roughly double that.
Resolution Is Not the Only Factor
Two 5MP cameras can use different amounts of data because bitrate, compression, frame rate and scene complexity may differ.
Live View vs Local Recording
Local microSD/TF recording does not necessarily travel over 4G. Opening live view or remotely playing recordings does transfer data.
How to Reduce Usage
- Limit continuous live viewing
- Use appropriate stream quality
- Use event alerts where suitable
- Record locally when supported
- Monitor SIM usage

FAQ
Does a 4G camera use data when nobody is watching?
It can. Alerts, cloud communication and event uploads may use data.
Does it need unlimited data?
Not necessarily. The right plan depends on actual use.
