A flooring or painting quote takes three readings: length, width and ceiling height. The meter adds, subtracts and converts them into area or volume, so the number on the screen is the one the material order is built from rather than a figure written on a wall.

Reference switching decides whether a reading starts at the front or the back of the housing. That matters when the body is pressed against a skirting board or a door frame and the distance should start from the wall, not from the meter's front edge.

Accuracy is quoted at plus or minus 2 mm, and the laser is Class 2 at 635 nm and under 1 mW, so keep the beam away from eyes and treat it as the measuring tool it is. Readings depend on light and on how well the target reflects: a dim room and a smooth pale wall give the longest results, a dark matte one the shortest.

What the meter will not change: it is intended for indoor use, and the 40 m or 60 m figure describes the best case rather than every surface. If your longest regular measurement is a hallway or a workshop bay, take the 60 m version; for single rooms the 40 m one is enough.
