Start with something easy: a leaf, a strand of hair or a drop of pond water on one of the four blank slides. The three eyepieces let a child begin at 200x and move up once the sample is centred, rather than starting at the highest setting and finding nothing.

The two lights do different jobs. The lower LED reflects off an opaque surface such as a coin or the top of a leaf, while the side LED passes light through a thin translucent sample, and the brightness can be turned down so a shiny specimen does not wash out.

The box includes four blank slides, a multiplier mirror, an eye shield, tweezers, two collection bottles, a collection box and a tutorial book, so a first session needs no extra parts. Batteries are not included, the power supply detail is worth confirming before a first session, and two options are offered with no stated difference between them.
