Setting a time takes a few presses: the quick-set buttons move through hours and minutes, and the same controls start and stop the countdown. It counts down from as much as 99 hours, then counts up past zero so you can see how far over a bake went.

A yellow pre-alert light can be switched on before the end, and the screen flashes red when time is up. At the top of its four volume levels the alarm reaches 90 dB, so it carries over a running tap; silent mode keeps the flash and drops the sound.

There is no backlight, so the digits are hard to read in a dim room; the screen suits daylight and kitchen lighting. It runs on three AAA batteries, which are not included, and a low battery indicator comes on before the display fades.
