ANENG MT87 Clamp Meter, 400 A AC, 1999 Counts, NCV and Data Hold

A tripping circuit or a warm plug is easier to trace when you can clamp one conductor and read the current. The ANENG MT87 is a 1999-count clamp meter with a 400 A AC jaw, 600 V AC/DC voltage, resistance, capacitance and a diode check. It suits home DIY and apprentice electricians.

A clamp meter for household circuit checks

In a consumer unit the jaw goes around a single live conductor, so you can compare the current on one circuit with another and narrow down which outlet is loading it. That is quicker than unscrewing terminals for every test point.

There is no DC current range here, so battery-side current measurement needs a different meter. What you do get is AC current, AC and DC voltage, resistance, capacitance, a diode test, a buzzer for continuity and an NCV mode for a non-contact check that you can compare against a probe reading.

Ranging is manual: choose the range, take the reading, hold it if the display moves. The meter runs on two AAA cells, which are not included, and the 108 g ABS body leaves room for it in a small tool bag.
