Check the gauge and projected guide separately
An angle reading and a projected line can help different stages of a layout. Seat the gauge properly, establish the reference and then use the laser guide where the task calls for it.
Verify alignment and calibration before a critical cut or mark. Avoid eye exposure to the laser and follow its class instructions; a projected line is not a guarantee of survey-grade accuracy across a room.
