Calibrate before checking the sample

A refractometer compares how the sample bends light. Prepare the reference calibration, place the liquid evenly on the clean prism and read the scale after following the temperature guidance.

Use the instrument for the intended seawater or low-concentration salt solution, not every dissolved mixture. The main salinity scale is 0-100 ppt rather than 100%, and the reading does not test the water's wider quality.
