A warm machine part or awkwardly placed surface can be difficult to reach with a contact sensor. An infrared thermometer provides another checking method, provided the target fills the instrument's measurement spot and the surface is suitable.

Allow for the 12:1 distance-to-spot ratio and the surface's emissivity. The instrument reads a surface rather than the air or material beneath it; shiny or transparent surfaces need particular care. It is an industrial thermometer, not a medical body-temperature device.
