Measure from a clear, consistent reference

Set the units and benchmark, steady the instrument and aim at a suitable target. A timer can help when the tool needs to rest in position before taking the reading.

Target surface and lighting affect laser measurements, especially farther away. Check important dimensions independently and do not aim the laser at eyes; a bubble reference helps alignment but does not automatically level the tool.
