Bark comes off a fence post in long strips with a pull stroke, and the edge stays in view as you work. This draw knife has an SK5 alloy steel blade and two walnut wood handles. It suits carpenters, carvers and furniture makers shaping a log by hand.

Strip bark and shape curves with a pull stroke

✅ Bark off a fence post The SK5 alloy steel blade is drawn towards you, taking bark and outer timber off posts and logs in long strokes.

✅ Ease a pencilled curve The flat blade follows a marked curve, so chair legs, tool handles and other rounded work can be shaped by hand.

✅ Two walnut handles Both grips are walnut wood, which keeps the hold firm and comfortable through a long afternoon of shaping.

✅ Clip on the blade guard A blade protector comes in the pack, so the edge is covered while the knife waits in a toolbox or rucksack.

✅ Control on the pull Because the edge cuts on the pull, the blade stays in view and follows the grain rather than digging across it.

It is a roughing tool. The blade takes off bark and waste in shavings, so expect to follow it with a spokeshave, file or sandpaper when a surface has to be smooth. On green wood, the same pull stroke rounds a chair leg or a tool handle without a lathe.

Around a garden or smallholding the obvious job is a fence line: weathered posts shed bark quickly, and a hand tool is easier to carry along the run than a hatchet. In a workshop it handles the first stage of a curved piece before finer tools come out.

The pack holds one draw knife with its blade protector and nothing else, so a sharpening stone, sheath or spare handle is a separate purchase. That suits someone who already keeps sharpening kit on the bench, and it keeps the cost of a single tool low.

Work with the blade flat against the timber and pull steadily, stopping short of your leg or the bench edge. Between jobs, put the protector back on; the edge is the part that decides how the tool performs.
