Sequence matters more than force. Red clamp to the positive post, black clamp to the negative post, charged pack into the holder, then start the engine as you normally would. Take both clamps off as soon as it catches: the instructions give a window of seconds and warn that leaving them connected can overheat the cable.
The holder is confirmed for Makita 18 V Li-ion packs (BL1430, BL1450, BL1830, BL1850, BL1860 and similar) and for Milwaukee M18 packs. Check the holder against the batteries you own before ordering, and charge the pack first, because the battery itself is not part of the set.
If the engine turns over without catching, the instructions say to wait a few minutes before a second attempt rather than cranking again straight away. A part-charged pack can waste the attempt, so charge it fully before a long drive.
