The dial has an order that has to be followed: wind it clockwise to the 55-0 mark at the top, stop before the zero mark, then turn it back counter-clockwise to the minutes you need. It rings when the pointer returns to zero. Set it that way every time rather than turning straight to the time you want.

In the kitchen it covers a tray of biscuits, a loaf, a pan of rice or a pot of tea. Away from the kitchen people use the same dial for a twenty-minute homework block, a plank hold, or rest between sets, because it can be carried from room to room and set without unlocking anything.

It does one job well: a single countdown to a bell. There is no second alarm, no count-up mode and no screen, so if you need several timers running at once a phone app is the better tool. The trade is that this one never needs charging and is visible from across the room.
