A floating shelf looks like it grew out of the wall until you see the brackets underneath. These two blind brackets sit inside the shelf, so only the board shows from the room. They come in three lengths and suit anyone fitting a shelf where visible metal would spoil the line.

Fitting is a two-step job: mark the height, fix the two brackets level with each other, then slide the drilled shelf onto them. A spirit level matters more than speed here, because two brackets at different heights will hold the board at an angle.
Choose the length by the depth of the shelf and the gap you are spanning. A short bracket under a deep board leaves the front edge unsupported, and a long bracket on a thin board can show through the face.
The board is not part of the pack, and neither are fixings for a hollow or plasterboard wall. Four screws and matching anchors come with the brackets; solid masonry and plasterboard need different fixings, so check the wall before drilling.
