Match the pulse setting before measuring speed
The instrument reads ignition pulses rather than mechanically contacting a rotating shaft. Use the correct pulse mode for the engine's ignition pattern; an incorrect setting can produce a misleading RPM value. Two- and four-stroke applications are stated, but that does not establish compatibility with every engine or ignition system.
Handheld sensing near a spark-plug lead and sensing through the supplied pickup lead are shown. Position the tool and lead according to the operating instructions, clear of hot or moving parts. Compare the result with the engine manufacturer's service information rather than treating the meter as an automatic tuning system.
